(a) Study Source A. What physical landscape did traders travelling along the Silk Road have to go through? (3m)
* Source A tells me that traders have to travel across harsh physical landscape like the mountainous regions, deserts and rivers. This is seen in the source where the map shows that traders had to travel across the Yellow River, the Taklamakan desert, Gobi desert and the Tien Shan mountains.
(b) Study Source B. What does the source tell you about living conditions in the Tien Shan mountains? (6m)
* Source B tells me that people living in the Tien Shan mountains had a limited dietary choice/ lived harsh lives. This is seen in Source B which says that the princess only had “dried meat" and "Kousmis (alchoholic drink)” for food.
* Source B tells me that people lived in an unsheltered environment in the Tien Shan mountains. This is seen in Source B which says “round tents is [the princess'] palace... its walls are made of felt”, which goes to show that there is a lack of proper shelter.
*Source B tells me that people lived a nomadic life in the Tien Shan mountains. This is evident in Source B which says that people lived in tents and ate dried meat.
Any 2 of the above supported inferences will do.

CIP Matters
Some of you had asked me this morning about the procedure for CIP registration. Please see the older post (on 5 Feb) below for information.
Quite heart-warming to see some active folks here in class to do CIP in this year. Take note that if you want to hit maximum CCA points in the LEAPS system for the S component ("Service"), you will have to hit minimum 120 hours. Do a simple mathematical calculation and you'll realise that you'll have to hit about 30 hours of CIP for each of the Sec 1 to 4 year. The schools' guidelines is min 100 hours of CIP for each student though.
For the Ju Eng Home (CIP) visit scheduled for you by the school for Sec 1 cohort, I think it is only max 6 hours (2 days x 3 hours). You will still have to complete the other (30-6=24 hours) to hit the suggested quota.
For your info.

IPW - Conflict Resolution
your homework for IPW lesson today... (refer to below)
The 35 proverbs listed below can be thought of as descriptions of some of the different strategies for resolving conflicts. These proverbs reflect traditional wisdom for resolving conflicts. Read each of them carefully and using the following scale, indicate how typical each proverb is of your actions in a conflict.
Attach a value (of 0 to 3) to each statement below
3 = frequent
2 = sometimes
1 = seldom
0 = none/ don't believe
- It is easier to refrain than to retreat from a quarrel.
- If you cannot make a person think as you do, make him or her do as you think.
- Soft words win hard hearts.
- You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.
- Come now and let us reason together.
- When two quarrel, the person who keeps silent first is the most praiseworthy.
- Might overcomes right.
- Smooth words make smooth ways.
- Better half a loaf than no bread at all.
- Truth lies in knowledge, not in majority opinion.
- He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.
- He hath conquered well that hath made his enemies flee.
- Kill your enemies with kindness.
- A fair exchange brings no quarrel.
- No person has the final answer but every person has a piece to contribute.
- Stay away from people who disagree with you.
- Fields are won by people who believe in winning.
- Kind words are worth much and cost little.
- Tit for tat is fair play.
- Only the person who is willing to give up his or her monopoly on truth can ever profit from the truths that others hold.
- Avoid quarrelsome people as they will only make your life miserable.
- A person who will not flee will make others flee.
- Soft words ensure harmony.
- One gift for another makes good friends.
- Bring your conflicts into the open and face them directly; only then will the best solution be discovered.
- The best way of handling conflict is to avoid them.
- Put your foot down where you mean to stand.
- Gentleness will truimph over anger.
- Getting part of what you want is better than not getting anything at all.
- Frankness, honesty and trust will move mountains.
- There is nothing so important you ahve to fight for it.
- There are two kinds of people in the world; the winners and the losers.
- When one hits you with a stone, hit him or her with a piece of cotton.
- When both give in halfway, a fair settlement is achieved.
- By digging and digging, the truth is discovered.
Scoring: Which animal category do you belong to?
Below is the list of question no. that falls into each animal category. Add the scores given to their corresponding question numbers and derive a total value for each category.
The category which you score the highest (add up all the values to each statement that applies) will represent typical characteristics you display when conflicts arise.
Categories: (statements that apply)
- Turtle: 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31
- Shark: 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27, 32
- Teddy Bear: 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33
- Fox: 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, 29, 34
- Owl: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35
E.g. to calculate the score for "Turtle" category...
Statement = Value (0 to 3 only)
- 1 = 0
- 6 = 1
- 11 = 3
- 16 = 2
- 21 = 3
- 26 = 3
- 31 = 0
Total value for 'Turtle' category = 0 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 0 = 9
Do likewise for other categories... I will share with the class on Wed (CME lesson) on what each of the animal categories mean in terms of the way they handle conflicts...
Have fun,
Mr Seth Tan
Updates of the meanings of the animal categories...
The Turtle: Withdrawing/ Surrendering (I LOSE – You WIN)
Turtles withdraw into their shells to avoid conflicts. They give up their personal goals and relationships. They believe it is hopeless to try to resolve conflicts. They feel helpless. They feel it is easier to withdraw (physically and psychologically) from a conflict rather than to face it.
The Shark: Forcing (I WIN – You LOSE)
Sharks try to overpower opponents by forcing them to accept their solutions to the conflict. Their goals are highly important to them, their relationships are of minor importance. They do not care if others like them or accept them. They assume that conflicts are settled by persona winning and another losing. They want to be the winner and try to win by attacking, overpowering, overwhelming and intimidating others.
The Teddy Bear: Avoiding (I LOSE – You WIN)
To Teddy Bears, the relationship is of great importance while their own goals are of little importance. They want to be accepted and liked by others and think that conflicts should be avoided in favour of harmony. They try to smooth over the conflict out of fear of harming the relationship.
The Fox: Compromising (I LOSE ½ / WIN ½ - You LOSE ½ / WIN ½)
Foxes are moderately concerned with their own goals and their relationships with others. They seek a compromise: they give up part of their own goals and persuade the other person in conflict to give up part of his goals. They seek a conflict solution in which both sides gain something.
The Owl: Resolving (I WIN – You WIN)
Owls highly value their own goals and relationships. They view conflicts as problems to be solved and seek a solution that achieves both the own goals and the goals of the other person. Owls see conflicts as a means of improving relationships by reducing tensions between two personas. They are not satisfied until a solution is found and the tensions and negative feelings are resolved.
Which animal category do you belong in? : )

Training details:
Date: 9 Feb OR 10 Feb OR 11 Feb
Time: 2.30pm to 3.30pm (for lower sec)
Venue: Sec AVA Room
Hope you have signed up for one of the days of training at the InfoComm Board.
Mr Seth Tan
Some feedback on you (My personal thoughts)
Know that there are many messages that I had posted within a day (see below)... hmm... but hope that all these info will help you to keep track of things that you should be aware of... (Don't assume that I'll post all info here on this blog. Do take responsibility for yourself too)
I have received several feedback from other teachers with regards to the attire and behaviour of individual students/ the class in general. Some of these feedback are positive (regarding your learning attitude, initiative, etc), in which I'm well pleased. In fact, I was thrilled to hear compliments from other teachers about how some of you have been spontaneous in fulfilling your roles as a subject leader, committee member, monitor, etc. Your desire to learn during lesson time is commendable also.
However, it has also been brought to my knowledge by other teachers that some of you are not abiding by school rules/ displaying lazy or indifferent attitude, which is worrying to me. I am not happy to hear that some of you are reading your story books during lesson time; talking and disturbing other classmates during lessons; ostracising classmates you don't like, not wearing your nametags; not wearing school socks, not participating enough during lesson; forgetting to bring your books, not wanting/ willing to take on responsibilities, not wearing PE attire when you have morning jog/ PE lesson, etc.
Although I know that it is inevitable that we fail at times, but yet in my heart I do have high expectations of you as you are my form class. I hope that you understand the angle I'm coming from when I share all these info with you. I'm not trying to pick on your faults, neither do I want to make you feel bad.
I believe that you are capable of leading yourself and leading others. Leadership begins from doing and fulfilling the small and menial tasks/ duties/ responsibilities that is required of us. Our action, or more often than not, our lack of action to do the small things does not conveniently excuse us. Rather, it explains flaws in our character that we need to set right. Let's help one another to strive for excellence and be blameless in both our thoughts and actions. To do that, let's start with the small things first...
I hope to see improvement in our class and hope that you will grow to love this class thru the year as you contribute actively to the well-being and image of the class.
Loving regards,
Mr Seth Tan

School Core Values - Expoused!
TRUTH
is to always strive for and show oneself true in deeds and to speak truthfully in love, and to guard against false pretenses and hypocrisy.
JUSTICE
is to always strive to ensure the well-being of others, as well as oneself, so that rights of all may be ensured or fulfilled, and all will be able to succeed and to reach their purpose.
FREEDOM
is the power, rooted in reason and will and justice, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one's own responsibility.
LOVE
is seeking and then fostering the good of others, by showing respect and consideration and unconditional acceptance.
Let us all live the School Core Values and imbibe in them.
Do not let these values be just a mental exercise. Live them out!

Class Committees formed!
Let's RENDER SUPPORT support to one another to fulfill the roles and duties assigned to us/ under our job scope. As communicated earlier, it DOES NOT MATTER whether you are a monitor or subject leader or committee chairman or member... there's NO DIFFERENTIATION IN IMPORTANCE between different roles. It is just a matter of different responsibilities needed from each role, and your ability to FULFILL WHAT IS REQUIRED for that role determines whether you have succeeded as a class leader.
PS:
I will be issuing and approving administrator status for all of you, so that you gals can start to post important info (e.g. homework, deadlines, info, etc.) on the blog.
Enjoy your new appointed roles and be diligent in them!
Cheers,
Mr Seth Tan

Class procedure for submitting Consent Forms
let's initiate a process to enhance our submission and collection of consent forms.
By now, you would have realised that there will be multiple consent forms/ reply slips that would have to be collected over this year.
As such, we'll have to streamline the process of distributing and collecting consent forms through these processes:
1) Distribution of consent forms and notices (with reply slips) -> this will be collected (at Sec 1 level bench) and distributed by Class Monitors (when they are elected by the class)
2) Collection of consent forms and replies -> all students are to submit them on the FOLLOWING WORKING DAY. Please also indicate on the top right hand corner of your reply slip your index no. (circled), for collation purposes. Class Monitors are to collect them and collate them by index no. order.
3) Late submission of consent forms and replies -> please put into the relevant class pigeon hole (on teacher's desk) according to index no.

Hi hi babes of Sec 1D!
By the time you read this post, the orientation camp and the cca fair would be over. I hope that you've enjoyed yourself thoroughly in the camp and made new friendships. Hope that you girls had bonded well with each other (and I'm sure all the more so in the weeks to come) and be proud of the new class that you have been allocated with.
You know, it has been exciting to meet you gals on the first week of school. Hm... come to think of it, it's always a privilege to be a form teacher. Promise you that I will try my best to be a good form teacher that takes care of your welfare and pastoral needs.
Well, know that the orientation camp might have been strenuous on you, so do rest well and recuperate for lessons next week ya? Do check back on this class blog often (add to your "Favorites" if you could) as I'll be updating this site with really cool stuff!
Enough said - sleep well,
Mr Seth Tan : )
